Malawi Rocket Stoves
This project involves the manufacture of rocket stoves and distributing them to the community, whereby cooking is currently done burning wood on stones.
The idea behind this project was created by Friends of Mulanje Orphans (FOMO) - a UK based charity looking after 4,000 orphans. Meal for the orphans were cooked in vast pans, on open fires, burning wood for fuel. This project pays for a Rocket Stove to be manufactured locally. The stove is 80% more efficient in its use of wood. The design channels the energy from the burning of wood to a specific area, under the pan. It also disposes of the smoke safely, compared with the smoke just blowing whichever way the wind was taking it.
The forestry commission in Mulanje, Malawi reported that between 1990 and 2000, some 25% of the forest area of Mount Mulanje was destroyed for its wood to be used in cooking and for building materials. The rocket stove would require 80% less wood and therefore require fewer trees to be taken from this valuable resource. With the trees still standing, they would take in CO2 gasses and through the process of photosynthesis replace it with Oxygen back into the atmosphere
This project is currently underway. It costs $200USD to make one rocket stove.
This project is to be monitored by the NGO Friends of Mulanje Orphans and by our Director Dave Armstrong who visits Malawi for his charitable contribution to FOMO.
UK Schools Carbon Education and Reduction Project
This project is designed so that offsetting monies go back into the local community. The chosen schools can be those whereby they are already seeking carbon reductions, or whereby employee’s children of the company providing offsetting monies attend.
Our teacher designed courses help to educate the school children in carbon reduction. The aim is through the use of demonstrations and educational materials to provide an insight into greenhouse gases and to show school children the positive steps required to live a more carbon friendly life.
School children and their families will be asked to make pledges into reducing their domestic carbon usage. All reductions are to be monitored and reported back to those providing the offsetting monies.
This project is to be monitored by the Carbon Consultancy Company directors.
MORE PROJECTS WANTED
Can you help us find more projects?
In our quest to offer those offsetting more and more choice, we are constantly looking for other projects that fit our current criteria.
Please read on, and then let us know about the project, by sending us an email.
Ask yourself the following:
Firstly does the project reduce greenhouse gas emissions and does it achieve economic and social development goals?
Is the project situated in those developing countries qualified in the Kyoto protocol as “Annex II”?
Does the project involve the local community and is there consultation in that community to encourage their participation?
Are their measurable sustainable livelihoods for those communities that participate?
Are you prepared to document and monitor the project, so that the goals and objectives set out are achieved?
Finally, you must show that without our input these projects would not happen.
